THE ART OBSERVER
May 2008
By Kelly Moralee
THE TOURING Millscapes exhibition
showcased a variety of work that
depicted the transformation of the North
West from rural, pastoral village life to the
sprawling conurbations created by the
Industrial Revolution. Slavery and the
cotton trade had an unprecedented
impact upon the British economy. The
relationship between the slave trade of
the Americas and the small towns of the
North West such as Oldham, Bury, Bolton
and Rochdale, is sometimes forgotten or
ignored but the Millscapes exhibition is
an example of the growing awareness of
the effects of slavery and the cotton trade
upon the landscapes and heritage of the
North West. The mills, aqueducts,
warehouse and rows of terraced houses
that dominate Manchesters skyline and
the surrounding Lancashire towns are the
visible remnants of the textile industry
THE MONA LISA is famous for
her enigmatic smile - we have
no idea if she had a good dentist
or not!
Most of us, when we smile,
show our teeth. It is a natural
reaction especially when we are
happy, enjoying the moment,
but how many of us when we
see our smile in a photo quickly
move onto the next with an
outcry of I hate photos of
myself. In short, few of us
naturally have a beautiful,
healthy, strong set of white
teeth. But with todays advances
in dental treatment it is now
possible for everyone to have the
smile they want and the self
confidence that comes with that
smile.
With todays newspaper head-
lines of not enough dentists that
may seem like an oxymoron.
However Dr Leo Klein and his
team at The Barton Cosmetic
Dentistry Centre will always
accommodate you. They have a
wealth of dental experience, up
to the minute dental technology
that propelled Britain towards the
global economy allowing her to become
one of the most powerful nations on
Earth. Continuing the theme of the
Millscapes exhibition that visited
Oldham, Rochdale and Stockport the
Wendy J Levy Gallery presented a selling
exhibition of contemporary work inspired
by the urban landscape of the North West
and featuring several of the Millscapes
artists. The gallery was very pleased to
debut work by established artists Russel
Howarth and Janina Cebertowicz who
had both previously exhibited at the Tib
Lane Gallery and whose work proved
immensely popular. Their work, alongside
that of Helen Clapcott and regular
exhibitors John Pegg, Liam Spencer,
Lynton Hemsley and Richard Clare, was
very well received. The exhibition was a
great success, demonstrating the unique
appeal of the cultural heritage that these
artists so effectively represent in their
work. Twenty-four pieces of work, by
various artists were sold in total. All six
of Richard Clares pieces were snatched
up rapidly. Lynton Hemsley, Reg Garnder
and John Pegg each sold the two paint-
ings they contributed to the show, with
artists Helen Clapcott and Janina
Cebertowicz also selling pieces of their
work. Russel Howarth sold two large oil
paintings but his exquisite pencil draw-
ings proved even more popular with
seven in total being sold. Mixing history
with contemporary art the exhibition
was both educational and engaging for
gallery audiences.
BEAUTIFUL
SMILES ARE A
WORK OF ART
on hand and a belief that every
patient is unique and deserves
the best dental solution for their
personal dental problem.
One solution they do practice is
an alternative to the implant vs
denture debate. Fixed removable
telescopic bridgework is a
solution where implants are
not appropriate and avoids the
embarrassment of overnight
removal of dentures.
Barton Cosmetic Dentistry Centre
is a fully private dental practice
that really does offer you a
quality comprehensive dental
solution in one practice.
Your teeth are worth the invest-
ment, especially when you look
in the mirror every morning
and when you and future
generations see those photos!
