9 THE ART OBSERVER June 2007 This exhibition brings together the work of Ghislaine and Michael Howard and their daughter Cordelia. GHISLAINE  is a nationally acclaimed artist whose work charts and records shared human experience. She often finds inspiration for her large dramatic figure paintings in the unguard- ed moments of everyday life. The works she has chosen for this exhibition are relatively small and intimate pieces that celebrate the choreographic nature of the figure in move- ment and repose, in her Las M e n i n a s   pieces she pays homage to the great tradition of European painting of which New signed limited edition prints to be launched at the Liam Spencer exhibition Liam Spencer’s next solo exhi- bition of paintings will take place at the Wendy J Levy Art Gallery in Didsbury during September of this year.  Liam continues to be the most talked-about and collected artist in Manchester, securing a retrospective exhibition at the Manchester Art Gallery in Mosley Street last year.  This was, indeed, a coup. Since the year 2000 when he was invited to be the first artist to show his work at the opening of the Lowry centre in Salford his work subse- quently became so much in demand that people were prepared to sleep overnight on the pavement outside the gallery in Didsbury in order to secure a purchase at his exhibition preview. Although Liam has become best known for his paintings of Manchester, he has enjoyed travelling over the last few years to places such as New York, Venice and Hong Kong, providing him with new and exciting subject matter. Thankfully, he never tires of painting Manchester and in his solo show in September, there will, no doubt, be a fine selection of work based on his various sources of inspiration. The many fans of his work can look forward to one, possibly two, new signed lim- ited edition prints that will be launched at his exhibition in September. The images are not yet on public release but the publisher, Wendy J Levy Contemporary Art Ltd, will release the images on the website: www.wendyjlevy- art.com a few weeks before his exhibition. Anyone not on the gallery mailing list who may like to receive an invitation to Liam Spencer’s exhibition should call the gallery on 0161 446 4880 or visit the website: www.wendyjlevy-art.com where you will be able to add your details to the mailing list. she sees herself to be a part. Michael is a lecturer in Art History at Manchester Metropolitan University; he is the author of LS Lowry, a Visionary  Artist  and his book M o n e t ,   especially written for the Musée Marmottan in Paris, has just been published. Originally trained as a painter, Michael paints for pleasure and to give pleasure. He recently represented Great Britain at the Varna Biennale in Bulgaria. Cordelia is an actor, painter and performer, best known to Manchester audiences as the dramatic lead singer of the band Beat Girl.  Cordelia has painted since she was a small child and she sees all her various artistic activities as separate strands that weave together, each nourishing the other. The paintings included in this exhibition are of herself and her friends. Taken together these works reveal a shared love of colour, light, texture and form - and an abiding delight in the work of past masters. Michael’s paintings reference his love of Manet, Matisse and Bonnard, whilst Cordelia makes no secret of her reverence for Picasso. Ghislaine’s Las  Meninas  paintings self-evi- dently are re-workings of the great painting by Velasquez.
