13   THE ART OBSERVER 6 Within the antique buildings of Warburton Street, there is, very appropriately, a wonderful bookshop. Morten’s Bookshop has been in Warburton Street for as long as anyone can remember. There is a host of tempting books here for Christmas with an impressive list of signed copies by well known authors including Alan Bennett ‘Untold Stories’; Stephen Fry ‘The Ode Less Travelled’; P.D. James ‘The Lighthouse’; Lynne Truss ‘Talk to the Hand’; Sebastian Faulks ‘Human Traces’ and Terry Pratchett ‘A Hat Full of Sky’. Other ‘must-have’ books for Christmas are ‘Schotts Almanac 2006’; ‘Hugh Johnson’s pocket Wine book 2006’; ‘Ashes Victory’ by the England Cricket Team; 8 On both sides of this narrow street is Harriet & Dee, occu- pying the old and the new prop- erties. On entering No.8 Warburton Street you find your- self inside an Aladdin’s cave, being surrounded by an array of extra- ordinary gifts for EVERY occasion. This unique and deceptively small shop has just what you need for baby and christening gifts; there is a wedding department with albums, guest books and diaries; you will pass fine furniture, pottery and toys. The card department here is quite splendid. Having specialised in hand-made cards for over twenty years, the company has an unrivalled collection of cards for every occasion and if they haven’t got the card you want - they can have one made for you! Harriet & Dee’s newly opened jewellery and accessories shop at No.9 has introduced designers from Italy and Denmark as well as local jewellers. Watches from Hot Diamonds, Breil and D&G sit alongside collectons of elaborate scarves and outrageous costume jewellery. Deciding on your choice of gift could be a lengthy process because you are sure to be spoilt for choice. 4 Nina and Paul Burton are the newcomers to Warburton Street at ‘No.4 Dine & Wine’, for- merly ‘Pepper’ restaurant. Paul, chef proprietor, creates and cooks a very varied modern English menu, using fresh ingredients from as many local suppliers as possible. The only items in the freezer are ice and ice cream! Nina manages the restaurant with her friendly team of staff, you can be assured of a warm welcome whenever you walk through the door of this intimate venue. This is a dream come true for Nina and Paul after many years of looking for the ideal location for their lifelong ambition of running their own restaurant. They have worked in many parts of the country and have run businesses for other people and now have the exciting opportunity of doing it for themselves. They are looking forward to a long stay in Warburton Street. The Wendy Levy Gallery is a small but busy gallery with a different exhibition being shown every month. The gallery represents artists from all over the country as well as a small number from abroad. Most of the gallery artists are from Manchester and the north west of England. The gallery has hosted exhibitions which have included work by internationally known artists as well as helping to promote the rising stars of the artworld. The gallery concentrates on showing paintings, drawings and sculpture as well as showing work by good printmakers, and there are new exhibitions booked every month for the next two years! Publishing is a fairly new venture, having published signed limited ‘Jamie’s Italy’ by Jamie Oliver and ‘The Broker’ by John Grisham. Morten’s have no shortage of choice for children, on their shelves you can find ‘Gruffalo’s Child’ by Donaldson & Scheffler; ‘Rainbow Magic Series’ by Daisy Meadows; ‘Charlie & the Chocolate Factory’ by Roald Dahl; ‘Alex Rider Series’ by Anthony Horowitz; ‘His Dark Materials Trilogy’ by Philip Pullman; ‘Best Friends’ and ‘Love Lessons’ both by Jacqueline Wilson. This is a small selection of titles that can be found in this enchanting bookshop, and in the unlikely event of not being able to find the book you want, you can always buy a book token! edition giclee prints by Liam Spencer and having published a book on this artist, ‘Liam Spencer Painting from Life’. Wendy J Levy Contemporary Art Ltd is about to publish a signed limited edition print by Martin Murrey. Wendy is hoping to publish another book in 2006, this time on a selection of female artists. She and Judy Rose, who will be writing the book for her, are still in the very early stages of planning the book. The Wendy Levy gallery also offers a first class framing service with plenty of help and advice if needed. Browsers to this special little gallery are always made welcome by the pleasant and friendly staff. 8 6 4 11 17 Occupying a large first floor office on Warburton Street is ‘edj’. This is a group of fully independent financial advisers and mortgage brokers. Together the team of five advisers boast over 100 years experience in providing sound financial planning advice. They advise businesses and private individuals throughout the north west region.
